Dr. Stephen Late

Dr. Stephen Late, 44, was once the director of the United States Department of Defense Division of Strategic Nanoscale Warfare (SNOW). He was surgically implanted with a man-machine interface that he soon discovers helps him communicate with scintillae.

Upon waking in a large underground Bunker, Dr. Late discovers odd radio transmissions from the surface. He contacts the archaeological team above, and is soon greeted by our game's antagonist, Duke Theodore Whest.

He eventually becomes navigator for XO Danny Milliams of the ISS (Independent Sky-Ship) Cicatrice.

He is the player character.

Duke Theodore Whest

Whest, 28, is a young and enterprising gentleman and scholar. He is a collector of antiquities of the Old Earth. He is the main antagonist during early and middle sections of the game. Although his ideologies may not be entirely evil, his actions imply that he is ruthless in his pursuit of knowledge.

Engineer Jackie "Fitz" Fitzmorris

A charismatic boffin, maintains the archaeological dig's advanced scintillary systems. He is is a gifted scintillary theorist, and his primary interest is in retrieving information from scintillae, rather than simply giving them instructions. He plays an advisory role to Late, updating him as to what scintillae have become, during the middle of the game.

Helps Dr. Late escape, and introduces him to pirate XO Danny Milliams.

He develops a wind current detection system, similar to doppler radar, but works by polling local scintillary systems.

Angelica Maestas

A spiritual Spanish girl, with a gift for understanding the intentions of scintillae. She is able to influence scintillae through meditation and prayer. She often comes to odds with Fitz, with strong ideological arguments.

A playful guiding spirit, visits Dr. Late every so often, and plays a key role in guiding Dr. Late and his crew towards the World Tree.
